The United States
Department of Education Office of
Elementary and Secondary Education has
awarded a Reading
First grant to .he Tennessee Department
of Education. The Office of Reading
First in Tennessee is housed in the
Division of Teaching and Learning,
Department of Curriculum and
Instruction.
Local Education Agencies (LEAs)/schools
who met .he selection criteria had the
opportunity to write a Reading First
subgrant, for children in grades
kindergarten (K) through three (3) who
are experiencing difficulty in reading.
Subgrants were awarded on a competitive
basis.
Improving instructional practices which
will improve student achievement is an
essential component of Reading First.
Reading First (Title 1, Part B) is the
literacy cornerstone of No
Child Left Behind.
Reading First schools receive services from Reading
First in Tennessee Regional Consultants. Some of
these services include technical assistance and
monitoring using the Literacy Observation Tool (LOT)
and Monitoring Instrument for Improvement. Reading
First Regional Consultants have experience in K-3
reading instruction and are familiar with the
guidelines of the Reading First grant. These
