Project CENTS
Project CENTS is a partnership between the Tennessee Department of
Education and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Education. 
Project CENTS works to enhance the delivery of environmental education
to all students in Tennessee.  Project CENTS supports K-12 educators
by coordinating training in environmental education curricula, facilitating
participation in action-based, school-wide environmental education;
maintaining a clearinghouse of environmental education opportunities
and offering grants and how-to information on outdoor classrooms.

Graduation Requirements through School Year 2008-2009
Three courses of science are required for high school graduation, one of which must be Biology I or Biology for Technology. One must be a physical science, chosen from the following: Physical Science, Earth Science, Geology, Chemistry I, Chemistry II, Physics, Principles of Technology I, and Principles of Technology II. Environmental Science is considered interdisciplinary and may be taught with a life or physical science content emphasis. Biology for Technology is a rigorous course that utilizes applied methodologies to prepare technical or dual path students for taking the Gateway assessment.

Graduation Requirements through School Year 2009-2010
The Freshman class of 2009-2010 with be required to have three credits in science. One of these must be Biology, one must be Chemistry or Physics, and one additional lab science course. State end of course test will be given in these three courses.


The purpose of this page is to provide information and support for implementing standards-based instruction in science. As per the governor's intent to ensure students are adequately prepared with 21st Century skills that enable them to be successful in post- secondary studies and training for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) career fields, cooperative efforts by state science and math curriculum coordinators has resulted in a STEM initiative that is represented by the logo shown above.
